Jen Llewellyn

The Art of Improvisation

She was born and raised in Lima, Peru and has called Miami, Florida her home for the past 45 years. She earned a bachelor's degree in architecture from Universidad Ricardo Palma and a master's degree in art education from Florida International University. For over twenty-five years she worked as an educator in the Miami-Dade Public School system and private organizations, while maintaining her own dedicated art practice.

Alongside her visual work, she has practiced the art of dance improvisation throughout her life, a discipline that continues to inform the fluidity, movement, and expressive qualities of her creative process.

Spontaneity and Intuition

Her artwork unfolds from spontaneity and intuition - a dance of color, texture and mark-making, where images emerge on their own accord. She prefers to be led by what emerges, trusting the process and welcoming the element of surprise. Her work is deeply influenced by the art of improvisation, the language of dreams and the rhythms of her inner landscape. Birds and the human figure often appear throughout her compositions.

In her collage series Poetry Behind the Mask, Llewellyn explores humor, the absurd and the authenticity of the self that exists beneath disguises and masks.

Jen Llewellyn's background in design and lifelong passion for dance improvisation have profoundly shaped her artistic vision, guiding her toward fluidity, play and embodied expression. With more than twenty five years of experience teaching art, she has expanded her curiosity across many mediums, working primarily in acrylics, mixed media and collage.

Ultimately, Llewellyn aims for her work to be an invitation - for the viewers to step into their own choreography, to meet themselves in color and image, and to be a witness of their own inner dance.
